Ingredient Elimination #2

As you may have noticed by my layout re-design, I am making more of a feature of the allergy element that my blog is aiming to navigate. I really feel that this has centred my focus. So today I wanted to bring you another post of this nature, the second in my ingredients elimination series. I f you haven’t read it, or want to re-familiarise yourself with it, you can find it here.

We will use the end point of the previous post; the ingredients found in the e.l.f. Glossy Gloss in Ballet Slippers but not in the Maybelline Colour Elixirs as out starting point.

Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Octyl Palmitate, Ethylene/Propylene Copolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Methlyparaben, Propylparaben. May Contain: Iron Oxides Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Mica (CI 77019), Red No. 6 Lake (CI 15850).

I recently reviewed the Rimmel Oh My Gloss! lip glosses & we will use these ingredients for today’s post.

Ingredients:

Polybutene, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Paraffium Liquidum/Mineral Oil/Huile Minerale, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Lanolin Oil, Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer, Calcium Aluminium Borosilicate, Synthetic Fluorphilogopite, Ethyhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Polyethylene, Silica, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil Methylparaben, Parfum/Fragrance, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, Tin Oxide, Linalool, BHT, Hydroxycitronellal, Hexyl Cinnamal, [May Contain/+/-:Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), D&C Red No. 7 Calcium Lake (CI 15850), D&C Red No. 27 Aluminium Lake (CI 45410), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), FD&C Yellow No. 5 Alluminium Lake (CI 19140), D&C Red No. 6 Barium Lake (CI 15850).

From this, we’ll take out the ingredients found in the Rimmel Oh My Gloss! lip glosses from the first set of ingredients to narrow down our search, leaving us with the potential allergens.

Octyl Palmitate. May Contain: Mica (CI 77019), Red No. 6 Lake (CI 15850).

You’ll notice that CI 15850 appears in both the Rimmel Oh My Gloss! ingredients & the potential allergens lists. This is because in the Rimmel ingredients, it is noted as being ‘D&C Red No. 7 Calcium Lake’ & in the potential allergens if is ‘Red No. 6 Lake. I am therefore leaving this ingredient in as a potential allergen as I don’t know enough about the scientific makeup to be able to tell whether these are the same or different (though I’m leaning toward them being different, otherwise they’d have the same description surely???).

Spot The Difference - L'Oreal Skin Perfection Cleansing Wipes

I thought today we’d play a little game of Spot The Difference! No, we aren’t going back to Nursery. This post is aiming to show just how difficult it can be for someone with allergies to shop.

Recently, while in London, I picked up my favourite makeup wipes, the L’Oreal Paris Skin Perfection Nourishing Cleansing Wipes. I was on the train home & decided to save some time by removing the majority of my makeup on the train so I had less to do once I’d arrived home.

I noticed straight away that the texture of the wipe was different. I was extremely lucky that the wipes structure had been changed, had it not have been I could have ended up in great difficulty. I straight away read the ingredients.

I spent the last hour of my journey with stinging, hot, red hands. I now have to look for an alternative makeup wipe that is moisturising & does not contain ingredients I’m allergic to.

Let's take a look at the old & new packaging side by side.

So, there are two differences on these packages. Can you spot them? I didn't! Here they are for you...

Although the bottom pack is the older version, it says 'New Pack'. The only other difference is the 'Extra Soft Cloth' image. The text is the same, the colour scheme is the same & there is nothing to indicate that the ingredients are any different. Is the back any different?

I think I's fair to say that the back of the packaging is different - not significantly different, but enough that, when put side by side, you can see that there is a difference. However, it is the front of the pack that people see in store!

Let's take a look at the ingredients now. This time we'll start with the original pack & then make a comparison with the new ingredients to see what's been changed.

Original ingredients: Aqua/water, Glycerin, Isopropyl Palmitate, PEG-100 Stearate, Glyceryl Steraate, Cetyl Alcohol, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Disodium EDTA, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Xanthan Gum, Tocopherol, 2-Oleamido-1, 3-Octadecanediol, Methylparaben, Quaternium-15, Parfum/Fragrance, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Hexyl Cinnamal. (FIL B11358/1).

Ingredients: Aqua/Water, Glycerin, Paeonia Suffruticosa Extract/Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, PEG-100 Stearate, Rosa Gallica Extract/Rosa Gallica Flower Extract, Glyceryl Stearate, Prunus Amygoalus Dulois/Sweet Almond Oil, Ammonium Polyacryldimethyltauramide/Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyl Taurate, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetet, Disodium EDTA, Isopropyl Palmitate, Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum, Cetyl Alcohol, Tocopherol, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol, Myrtrimonium Bromide, Parfum/Fragrance, FIL B16-4911/2.

In addition to the sweet almond oil & citric acid that have been added to the new formula the following ingredients are new:

Paeonia Suffruticosa Extract/Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Rosa Gallica Extract/Rosa Gallica Flower Extract, Ammonium Polyacryldimethyltauramide/Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyl Taurate, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol, Myrtrimonium Bromide, FIL B16-4911/2.

The problem this change of ingredients causes is a difficulty that all people with allergies face to a greater or lesser extent. Those following a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle face similar difficulties. This extends to all products, not just beauty. Prior to being on the FODMAP diet & so not being able to eat dairy, I have eaten Mars bars without realising that the ingredients had changed to include ‘may contain wheat’. This was subsequently removed so I was able to go back to eating Mars bars!

Unfortunately, I don’t have the time or energy to check every the ingredients of every single item in my food shop or when I’m picking up a few of my beauty staples before work. I do my best to check for differences in packaging, but it isn’t easy.

Lip Product Allergen - Ingredient Elimination #1

One of my earliest posts was on my not-so-great experience with the e.l.f. Glossy Gloss in Ballet Slippers. It wasn’t anything specific about the product itself, it was that one or more of the ingredients caused an allergic reaction. I’ll link my post on it here if you’re interested. I am yet to work out what it is in many lip products that cause me to react. I thought I’d draw comparison with the recently reviewed Maybelline Colour Elixers, products that most definitely do not cause a reaction!

So the ingredients of the e.l.f. Glossy Gloss are as follows:

If we take the e.l.f. ingredients, then take out those also found in the Colour Elixers, we are left with these:

Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Octyl Palmitate, Ethylene/Propylene Copolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Methlyparaben, Propylparaben. May Contain: Iron Oxides Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Mica (CI 77019), Red No. 6 Lake (CI 15850).

From this, I’ll compare further to other lip products that don’t cause a reaction to (hopefully) pinpoint the ingredient that caused a reaction (other wise I’ll end up with egg on my face, & that won’t be good as I’m allergic to egg!).

My Journey To Find My Lip Product Allergen – e.l.f. Glossy Gloss

Hi Everyone!

Being a beauty blog with emphasis on allergens & ingredients, I thought I would take you on my journey to find what it is in lip products I am reacting to. I can read the ingredients in lip products & not see anything I know to be a problem, yet still react! So enough is enough!

If you're having a reaction to something but don't know what, you might find this method of elimination helpful.

So recently I purchased the e.l.f. Studio line Glossy Gloss in Ballet Slippers.

By the next day I had a crack in one corner of my mouth!

The ingredients are as follows:

Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Polyisobutene, Octyl Palmitate, Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Methlyparaben, Propylparaben. May Contain: Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Mica (CI 77019), Red No. 7 Lake (CI 15850), Red No. 27 Lake (CI 45410), Red No. 6 Lake (CI 15850), Blue No. 1 Lake (CI 42090), Yellow No. 5 Lake (CI 19140), Yellow No. 6 Lake (CI 15985)

What I'm going to do is take this list as a starting point. When I use a new lip product I'll add or take away ingredients depending on whether I react or not & hopefully end up with the culprit at the end!
